Again we would like to invite choristers to join us to form the massed choir for our annual Hymnfest. This year's theme will consist of hymns and anthems covering the main seasons of the Church Year. We will begin with Advent and move through several seasons including Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, Trinity and finishing with Christ the King. We will be singing one favourite hymn from each season and including some anthems and instrumental items. As rehearsal time is at a minimum, we do require that all choristers are familiar with all the music before our main rehearsal. The two anthems this year will both be by Handel and should be well known. We will be singing Handel's 'Hallelujah Chorus' from Messiah for Easter and 'Zadok the Priest' for Christ the King. For those who have not sung them before, there are rehearsal recordings available online (see links below). There will be a massed choir rehearsal prior to the concert.
If you wish to join us, could you please email Mark Quarmby, the Director of Music, so that we have some idea of numbers per part for the day: firstname.lastname@example.org
Hymnfest will be conducted by our Choral Director, David Hood and will be accompanied by the organ and our brass ensemble with timpani.
As usual, we will have a combined choir rehearsal the Sunday before on Sunday 6th September at St Stephen's, Macquarie St commencing at 1.30pm.
We will have a warmup on the Hymnfest day and allocate seating positions at 1pm. The performance will start at 2.30pm and there will be an afternoon tea to follow in the hall downstairs.
Dress for the performance will be like previous years, all black or black and white.

All choristers should be familiar with the harmonies for those verses to be sung in harmony and
sopranos, in particular, will need to learn the descants in advance of our rehearsal.
If you don't have a score of Messiah or a copy of Zadok, both are out of copyright and can be downloaded for free by clicking on the links below.
Handel 'Hallelujah Chorus' (13 pages) or you can use your own Messiah scores
Handel 'Zadok the Priest' (15 pages)

We are looking forward to you joining us again this year.
On Sunday 2 August, St Stephen's is hosting a HymnSing, not to be confused with our annual HymnFest. This is to mark the 200th anniversary this year of Methodism in Australia and will be devoted to hymns by Charles Wesley. We are not having a massed choir or brass but everyone is welcome to attend and sing a number of hymns, many of which have not appeared in our modern hymn books, plus some old favourites. The Ashfield Tongan Parish Choir will also be singing and the hymns will be accompanied on the organ by David Drury and Mark Quarmby.
